How to Deal With People Better Than You?

It is common for people to compare themselves to someone else. A classmate who always knows the answer, a girl who always look beautiful or a colleague who is full of ideas- we all have these types of people in our lives and overtime start feeling bad about ourselves because they are so much better than us. They are the reason people we suffer from low self-esteem. But is it? Or can it be controlled? Here are 6 ways to deal with people better than you.

#1.  Acknowledge the Truth

The first step to dealing with such  people is to acknowledge the truth that they are in a way better than you. But this is nothing to lose your sleep over because there is always going to be someone better than you and someone else better than them. Be open and receptive towards these people and you may learn a few things.

#2.  Stop comparisons and be honest with yourself

Every single person is unique and has his/her own set of strengths and weaknesses. So, comparing yourself with someone else doesn’t make sense. The people you are comparing yourself with have their own unique qualities which have helped them become the people they are today. You have your own set of qualities. Instead of comparing those to someone else’s, you should recognize them and be honest with yourself. What is it that you lack and how can you fill that gap? Start introspecting and you will see the answers.

#3.  Know your strengths

It is always better to polish your skills and focus on your strengths rather than worry about things you lack. What are your strengths? Maybe you have a good sense of humour or maybe your technical skills are better than everyone at work. Everyone has their strengths and it is always better to recognize them so that they can act as shields against negative thoughts or when you see someone better than you.

#4.  Practise

Whether you are being haunted by negative thoughts about your physical appearance or a new colleague who can program better than you, you shouldn’t let either get to you. If you lack in technical skills then learn them. Start asking questions, even if they are stupid. It is better to seem ignorant than assume you know something. You have to stop criticizing yourself at every opportunity you get. Next time you feel insecure about the way you look, pause and take a deep breath before reacting or succumbing to negative thoughts or self-loathing. Remember that you are unique and do not have to compare yourself to someone else.

#5.  Remember that you can’t control everything

Sometimes, despite your best efforts you might still not get the promotion or not know the answer or have any creative ideas in the next meeting. Well, you might not be the smartest person in the room but you certainly can be the most prepared. So, take that as your cure and start preparing. Know the agenda of meeting, come up with a few points and substantiate them with facts. Even if you can’t get any smarter, you can always work hard.
