From deodorants to lipsticks and couch, your house is full of potentially toxic chemicals and you might not even be aware of it. Here are 10 everyday toxic things in your home you had no idea about.

BPA or Bisphenol A is commonly used in clear plastics. The substance can mimic estrogen in the body and is therefore harmful to children and babies. Though it has been banned from baby products, it has already got a replacement BPS which is no better than BPA. BPS can disrupt normal cell functioning that can give rise to various health problems.

It seems great to use stain resistant carpets and not worry about coffee or wine stains but various industrial chemicals used to make them stain resistant can lead to health issues. Many of them include PFOA which is a Teflon chemical associated with cancer and thyroid disease.

#3. Perfumes

Sure they smell nice but contain potentially harmful chemicals such as benzaldehyde, camphor, acetone and methylene chloride which can cause various health problems when these chemicals are inhaled. Various problems that can arise include headaches, nausea, dizziness, irritation and kidney damage in some cases.

Considering how much time we spend in bed, the harmful chemicals called PBDEs found in mattresses seem quite hazardous. Exposure to them can lead to decreased sperm quality, thyroid problems and brain damage. Mattresses with PBDEs have been banned in various US states and Canada. So, if you want a comfy sleep and not worry about health problems, better go for a mattress without PBDEs.

People often use mothballs to avoid moths chewing holes in their clothes but remain unaware of the fact that they can cause cancer in animals. Other substances such as napthalene which is a common ingredient of moth balls are known to destroy red blood cells, cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea on prolonged exposure.

Most of the plastic containers we use in everyday life are made of phthaltes which can affect body’s endocrine system and lead to adverse impact on neurological, developmental and reproductive abilities of the body. Moreover, plastic bottles break over time, he likelihood of coming in contact with these substances increases.

#7. Hand Sanitizer

 

Triclosan in an active ingredient in hand sanitizers and toothpastes which has been several hormonal problems including early puberty and infertility. So unless there is no other option, better wash your hand the old-fashioned way- with soap and water.

#8. Cosmetics

These need no introduction and contain a host of toxins and chemicals not suited for your skin and body. It is always a good idea to look for mineral- based cosmetics or the ones made from natural oils.

#9. Fabric softeners

They cover your clothes with a thin layer of chemical such as quantenary ammonium salts which can lead to headaches, respiratory problems and skin irritation.

#10. Canned foods

Most canned food containers contain BPA which can lead to hormonal imbalance and male infertility. However, many manufacturers have replaced this particular compound, opting for fresh foods sounds like a better option.
